NOM NOM NOM

September 24, 2013 at 8pm

CFA has teamed up with the Logan Square art space, Comfort Station, for a new 16mm screening series! Join us the last Tuesday of every month for rarely screened oddities and gems from the vault.

Next up…NOM NOM NOM

An onomatopoeic phrase most affiliated with Cookie Monster’s distinctive eating style and Youtube cat videos, “nom nom nom” (or more fully, “om nom nom nom”) has permeated our internet-rich vocabularies to characterize particularly delicious food. Join us for a selection of 16mm shorts about, well, delicious food. Locally produced ads, an educational film about food prep, excerpts of anthropomorphic garden vegetables and a documentary by the late & great Les Blank are sure to titillate those taste buds. And who knows…maybe some surprise treats will also make an appearance!

Kentucky Fried Chicken “Sunday Dinner” (1968), Film Group/Mike Gray Associates, Color (faded), Sound, 1 min, presented in 16mm (print from the Chuck Olin Collection)
An advertisement for KFC’s innovative fried chicken on the go.

Food Preparation (2nd Edition) (1978), Journal Films, Color, Sound, 15 min, presented in 16mm (print from the Chicago Public Library Collection)
A thorough introduction to the art of planning and preparing delicious 1970s supermarket meals.

Flovor-Kist Cookies “Crunch” (1967), Film Group/Mike Gray Associates, Color, Sound, 1 min, presented in 16mm (print from the Chuck Olin Collection)
An advertisement for Flavor-Kist Cookies (produced by Schulze and Burch Biscuit Company) and their varying levels of crunch intensity.

Unknown Kid’s Show excerpt (trust us, it’s good!) (circa 1960), Color, Sound, 8 min. (print courtesy of of Nicholas Osborn)
Garden vegetables come alive in this excerpt from an unknown children’s program.

Minnie Pearl’s Fried Chicken (1968), Film Group/Mike Gray Associates, Color (faded), Sound, 1 min, presented in 16mm (print from the Chuck Olin Collection)
An advertisement for the short lived Minnie Pearl’s Fried Chicken franchise. Featuring Minnie Pearl herself!

Garlic Is As Good As Ten Mothers (1980), Les Blank with Maureen Gosling, Color, Sound, 51 min, presented in 16mm (print from the Chicago Public Library Collection)
A zesty paean of praise to the greater glories of garlic. This lip-smacking foray into the history, consumption, cultivation and culinary/curative powers of the stinking rose features chef Alice Waters of Chez Panisse, and a flavorful musical soundtrack. In 2004 ‘Garlic’ was one of 25 films, selected by The Library Of Congress, to be added to the National Film Registry list of now 400 motion pictures, to be preserved in perpetuity.
