Abstract
Footage depicting the 29th Annual National Cherry Pie Baking Contest, which took place on February 22, 1961, at the Morrison Hotel in Chicago. Sherry Shirley of West Virginia is announced as the winner.
Description
The footage begins depicting women in uniforms (a cherry motif embroidered onto their lapels, and hats decorated with cherries) making their way on stage and announcing their names one by one before taking their place next to their respective work stations. Women from all 50 states are represented.
The film captures the women baking the pies from scratch, meticulously following their own processes. When time is up, the women bring their pies to the judges and leave their work on various tables. The pies are divvied up by region: Western, Southern, and so on.
The final shots are of the winner being announced, Sherry Shirley of West Virginia. She is feted by the judges and members of the press as she tearfully accepts her prize.
