Abstract

A student award ceremony held at St. Gerard Majella Church during Unity Week.

Description

This film opens with exterior views of St. Gerard Majella School and Church, and then shifts to within the church to observe the start of mass. Father Daniel Sullivan and George Peterson, a representative of Dr. Joseph Lowery of the Southern Christian Leadership Council, proceed toward the lectern. Father Sullivan introduces Peterson who approaches the lectern and announces that St. Gerard Majella student, Thomas E. Miggins III, is one of the winners for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Art and Essay Contest, sponsored by Motorola. As Peterson makes the announcement, a spotlight finds a surprised Miggins sitting in the congregation and follows him to the lectern where he reads his essay aloud. The film concludes as Miggins poses with his parents, and Sister Aquinas congratulates him while an unidentified arm thrusts a WLS-TV Channel 7 microphone into corner view.
