Description
In 1974, after winning the World Heavyweight championship title from George Foreman in Montreal, Chicago's Mayor Richard J. Daley invited Muhammad Ali to a homecoming reception at City Hall.
The opening segment of this film depicts Muhammad Ali decending from his airplane after arriving to Chicago's Midway Airport, being taken by a car convoy to City Hall, and attending a press conference where he was presented with the Chicago Medal of Merit by Mayor Richard J. Daley. Here, Mayor Daley also presented him with a poetic proclamation which included the lines:
"I Richard J. Daley, mayor of the city
Do proclaim for this champion, clever and witty,
For Muhammad Ali his own special day
For receiving the honors he won the hard way."
Significant people surrounding Muhammad Ali at the reception ceremony include Wilson Frost, Walter Turner, Alderman Tyrone Kenner, and State Senator Cecil Partee.
Afterwards, Ali is shown being interviewed by an ABC7 journalist. He talks about his sound defeat of George Foreman, a goal to build a hospital in Chicago's South Side, and an interest in fighting in Chicago.
