Abstract
Sound home movie (SOF refers to "Sound on Film") of the Koza family at home in Cleveland, OH, during Christmastime. The film begins silently, with the family enjoying a meal and making faces to the camera. The next part introduces sound with an interview with Frank Koza's grandmother and two other female family members, conducted primarily in what sounds like Czech. The film concludes with scenes of Koza's mother Albina and brothers Roland and Thomas enjoying themselves with alcohol in the kitchen. Visible in the scene (and used as a prop) is the microphone used to record their conversation, which includes jokes about beer and liquor preferences and impressions borne out of the myriad ways to wear a hat. Due to Frank Koza's profession as a newsreel cameraman, this film was likely shot with the Auricon camera he would have used for location shooting, capable of recording optical sound directly onto the negative. The original negative for the third part of this film is also part of the collection.
