Highlights begin with North Carolina's Joe Quigg as he scores 2 points on a jump shot from the right corner. Maurice King of Kansas scores on a long set shot, with Kansas leading by one point with less than 2 minutes left in the game.

Gene Elstun of Kansas takes a pass from Wilt Chamblerlain to score 2 points from underneath the basket to take a 3-point lead with 1:45 left. But Maurice King hits on a long jump shot with 0:44 left, and NC trails by one point. NC's Tommy Kearns is fouled and makes the free throw to tie the score with 0:09 left. The game is tied as regulation time expires.

In what would be the first overtime period, Wilt Chamberlain scores to tie the game at 48 with 1:44 left. Tommy Kearns' shot is blocked by Chamberlain and the score is still tied at 48.

In the second overtime, Tommy Kearns is fouled but misses the free throw. Pete Brennan fouls Wilt Chamberlain with 0:49 left, tempers flare, but Chamberlain misses the free throw and the second overtime ends with the score still tied.

In the third overtime, after Tommy Kearns scores to take the lead for NC, Chamberlain scores on a layup, is fouled, and makes the free throw, giving KU a one-point lead. Gene Elstun makes a free throw for KU with 20 seconds left. Joe Quigg is fouled in the act of shooting with 0:06 left in the game and makes both free throws, putting NC ahead by one point. Kearns blocks a pass to Chamberlain and the North Carolina Tar Heels win their 32nd consecutive game, and the NCAA Championship, 54-53.
