Abstract
As its title indicates, this footage was taken at Garfield Park Conservatory in the west side of Chicago, during the Christmas Flower Show of 1984. JoAnn Elam films from inside the greenhouse and she first seems more interested in the glass structure than in the plants and flowers on display. The image is dark and blue, with the plants and flowers standing out as shadows against the background. Then Elam walks around, at different paces, surrounded by vegetation. She once turns her attention to the reflections on the pool and a man (possibly her friend Chuck Kleinhans) taking photographs (of the show and of her) appears twice in the frame. Similar to a home movie documenting Elam’s visit to Garfield Park Conservatory, this footage perhaps also reveals how Elam seized every opportunity to play and experiment with her camera.
