Abstract
The Immigrant (also called Broke) is a short comedy film starring the Charlie Chaplin Tramp character as an immigrant coming to the United States who is accused of theft on the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, and befriends a young woman along the way. It also stars Edna Purviance and Eric Campbell.

00:00 - Broke (Buster Keaton) enjoys his time on a ship carrying immigrant passengers while everyone around him is miserable and seasick, a woman (Edna Purviance) at dinner catches Broke’s eye 03:06 - Broke gambles rolling dice with other passengers, his winning angers a large burly man who throws a tantrum, sneaks off and steals money from a sleeping woman and goes back to gamble more, Broke wins at cards this time, Broke pulls out a gun to escape the grips of the angry man 05:55 - Broke stumbles into a young woman who holds her mother crying, she has lost her money, Broke slips his winnings into her pocket when she is not looking, decides he gave too much and goes back into her pocket to grab some money for himself, the ship captain sees this and accuses Broke of theft, he calls the woman over who finds the money and thanks Broke for his kindness 07:51 - arrival in the Land of Liberty, Broke and the lady say goodbye 08:53 - later Broke finds himself hungry and broke picking change off the ground, walks into a restaurant where he annoys the waiter, the lady from the ship sees him in the restaurant, they embrace and dine together 12:01 - a man who is 10 cents short of his bill is beaten and removed from the restaurant, Broke checks his pockets for his money and realizes it is lost through a hole in his pocket 13:53 - a bum walks in with a shiny new coin for dinner, Broke is sure that it is his, as he goes to confront him, the waiter drops a coin on the ground, Broke sneakily picks up the quarter to pay, finds out it is fake 15:56 - a man across the room stares at them, sits with Broke and the man and introduces himself as an artist, wants to paint them, the waiter brings the artist back his change, Broke sneaks the change to pay his bill, ask for money in advance for modeling the next day 18:24 - Broke and the lady leave in the rain, kiss, he drags her in to get a room, the end
