Description
A short experimental documentary film that captures the turbulent 1968 Democratic Convention which took place in Chicago, and its dark aftermath. In Campaign, Palazzolo offers quickly edited montage sequences with an aural pastiche that serves to underscore the performativity of the politicians organizing the event, as well as the general sense of unease enveloping the whole enterprise.
The film begins with footage of demonstrators swarming the statue of General John Logan in Grant Park, which ended up becoming a kind of inflection point for the riots after. The police begin to attack the protesters, and many are shown clearly covered in blood. Images of the violence is interspersed with footage of Abbie Hoffman, William S. Burroughs, Jean Genet, Norman Mailer, Dick Gregory, Allen Ginsberg, and folk singer Phil Ochs speaking to the protesters.
The historic Kraft headquarters, previously located at 500-510 N. Peshtigo Ct. is also prominently featured (the building has since been demolished and the company moved their operations elsewhere in the early aughts).
