Footage depicting union workers protesting at Chicago's Grand Central Station in 1959 before boarding a train to attend the Unemployment Conference in Washington D.C.
Description
Film begins with footage of picketing workers carrying signs with slogans “Let’s Wake Up the Full-Belly Politicians” from the union Local 471 UAW, and another sign from Ford Aircraft Delegates: “Help the 5,000 Unemployed - Get American to Work.” Other signs demand shorter work weeks.
This is followed by a scene of a man painting on the train “Act or We will Be Back.” Protesters soon board the train, some playing an accordion, and there is a distinctively festive atmosphere as they get ready to go to Washington D.C.
