CAMERA ON CHICAGO with soundtrack by Steve Krakow

May 10, 2014 at 4pm

The University of Chicago and the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts host Let’s Get Working, a three-day festival honoring the life and work of Studs Terkel, Chicago icon and UChicago alumnus. The festival will introduce Terkel’s work to new and younger audiences while celebrating individuals and groups, local and national, who have been impacted, influenced, and inspired by the man and his legacy.

As part of the fest, South Side Projections presents CAMERA ON CHICAGO by Chicago-based amateur filmmaker and CFA collection namesake Warren Thompson. Filmed over many years, the film documents the city’s intense postwar growth and is a continuing effort to record some of the events, characteristics, problems, and glories of Chicago. Footage includes architecture, sculpture, housing, Lake Michigan, Chinatown, parades, Maxwell Street Market, and the people of Chicago. Thompson captures life and culture from the most affluent to the poverty stricken.” Steve Krakow, creator of the “Secret History of Chicago Music” series in the Chicago Reader, will curate a soundtrack of Chicago-made music for this silent film, using songs that alternately complement and comment on Thompson’s shots.
