AMATEUR
(169 titles and elements)
Particularly important to CFAs holdings are collections of
Chicago amateur filmmakers, whether they are collections of fiction
narrative films or the more traditional domestic or travel home
movies. Margaret Conneely, an award winning and prolific amateur
filmmaker, who began making films when she joined a local amateur
film club in 1949, has donated all of her films and those of others
that she collected throughout the years. (a total of 169 films)
She shot and directed 16mm films at a time when most of the women
of these clubs were less technically inclined and often delegated
to the role of actress or slides manager. Her work is well crafted,
clever and subtly subversive. One of her films, The Fairy Princess,
was awarded a NFPF preservation grant and the resulting elements
will reside at CFA. Three others are being restored through a preservation
grant from the Women's Film Preservation Fund and Colorlab film
laboratories.
(53 reels with 6 audio tapes)
The Doerring collection is comprised of 8mm and 16mm films, both
professional and amateur. There are 10 titles of 16mm professionally
made films and 43 8mm (what appears to be) home movies. Of the 43
home movies, 15 are by John and Evelyn Kibar. These films were made
for exhibition at cinema clubs. Six of these films are accompanied
by audio tapes.
(99 reels)
This collection was donated by the Berolzheimer family in Evanston.
This collection has both 16mm and 8mm films totaling 99 reels of
home movies. In the future we hope to interview this family about
the films and consider this collection a part of our important amateur
film collection.
(4 reels)
The Rives Collection consists of 4 reels of early 16mm film made
circa 1924 to 1927. One reel is an exceedingly rare copy of Cunard
Oceanews. Three reels depict an organized summer tour of European
countries by a group of four Dartmouth College travelers, apparently
made on behalf of a student travel Club. All four films are potentially
unique, definitely warranting further research.
(2 reels)
John Sanner is a member of the South Side Cinema Club and was one
of our earliest home movie donators. The two reels of Super 8mm
films are fiction films he made with other club members. He recently
donated more reels of his collection.
Susan Gray donated 8mm home movies from her family that include
her childhood in New Orleans.
(16 reels)
Donated by Charlotte Adelman, this collection of Super 8mm travel
home movies was made by Judge Mary Hooten who was president of the
Women's Bar Association in Chicago from 1976-1977. In the collection
there is travel footage of the Antarctic, Japan, Norway, Morrocco,
Hong Kong, Bangkok and Hawaii from the 1960s.
